Round 3 Baja – Lorca, Spain
Posted on 24 May 2023
Baja Lorca Ciudad del Sol Rally is an extremely popular off-road event that takes place in the region of Murcia, Spain. The rally takes place over two days and covers a total distance of around 350 kilometres, most of which is off-road, taking the competitors through a variety of terrains, including dirt roads, rocky terrain, and sandy dunes, making it a challenging and exciting event for both drivers and navigators.
One of the unique features of the Baja Lorca Ciudad del Sol Rally is that it is open to both professional and amateur drivers, which makes it accessible to a wider range of participants. The event also features several different categories, including cars, buggies, and motorcycles, allowing for a diverse range of vehicles to compete – which should make for exciting spectating!
Organised by the Lorca Automóvil Club, the club is responsible for ensuring that the event runs smoothly and safely and works closely with local authorities to ensure that the route is well marked and that safety measures are in place to protect both competitors and spectators. Founded in 1996, the club was created by a group of friends, all of them fans of the motor sport and eager to bring an event to the region of Guadalentín. In 2011 the club decided to carry out a test that would serve as a pre-registration of the Spanish Championship of Gravel and All Terrain Rallies, and so the Rallye Tierras Altas de Lorca was born. Supported by local businesses and politicians the event has grown in strength and is now in its 10th year.
But it’s not just about the rallying! The Baja Lorca Ciudad del Sol Rally also features a range of activities and events for spectators to enjoy including food and drink stalls, live music, and other entertainment, making it a fun event for the whole family with many visitors staying for the whole weekend.
So, what can the Bowler Teams expect? Fresh from their experience in Gatinais, France, last month, Lorca is Round 3 of the Baja Tata Elxsi Defender Series by Bowler 2023 and the teams are looking forward to another new and exciting course, and this course won’t disappoint. There are a number of elements that will be new to our drivers and will test them both mentally and physically. The stages are much longer, so endurance will play a key part for both drivers and their vehicles. The temperatures are hotter and although our teams are lucky enough to have Bowlers fitted with air conditioning, the vehicles themselves risk feeling the heat, especially as the drier conditions should mean the teams are reaching higher speeds. They really will need to dig deep and lean on all the training and experience they have obtained over the last 12 months with Bowler.
The Bowler team will be supporting each car, with a dedicated technician, comprehensive spares, electrical specialists, catering, and a depth of experience from the entire crew. Set up is on Friday and the cars will be verified through scrutineering before the teams take on a recce of the stages. Saturday morning will be an early start, beginning with driver and team briefings and final checks on the vehicles ahead of stage 1. Follow the Bowler social media channels for live updates across the weekend!
